After the opening try Humphreys and Edinburgh's Duncan Hodge exchanged penalties on 16 and 17 minutes respectively, both attempts successful, Edinburgh 3 - 10 Ulster, before Andrew Trimble made a magnificant try saving tackle on Edinburgh's flying winger Simon Webster after centre Phil Godman charged down a David Humphreys' clearance.
Hodge added another penalty for Edinburgh on 31 minutes after Isaac Boss was penalised for an off the ball incident, however 4 minutes later, Edinburgh No. 8 David McCallam was show the yellow card by referee Whitehouse and Ulster made the most of their advantage coming out on top after heavy pressure on the Edinburgh line. On the third attempt at a scrum and with Ulster's put-in, Roger Wilson controlled the ball as Ulster drove forward and Boss got his hand to the ball for the touchdown. Humphreys conversion and Hodge's missed a penalty attempt late into injury time in the first half saw Ulster enter the break 17 - 6 ahead of the home side.
Half-time score: Edinburgh 6 - 17 Ulster
After the re-start, both Humphreys and Hodge had successful penalty efforts, Edinburgh 9 - 20 Ulster. Humphreys extended Ulster's lead with another attempt on the 50 minute mark, but the game shifted up a gear just a few minutes later when Ulster captain Simon Best was sin-binned by the referee for careless use of the boot.
Edinburgh capitalised on their one man advantage and after some pressure on the Ulster line were awarded a penalty try when Ulster were penalised for persistantly pulling down the driving maul - an easy conversion for Hodge in front of the posts gifted Edinburgh the seven points. However Ulster responded when Boss passed to Steinemetz from the base of the scrum and the centre chipped into the corner for Andrew Maxwell to pick up, the winger touching down for his second try of the evening. Humphreys missed the conversion but Ulster were back in the driving seat, Edinburgh 16 -28 Ulster.
The game took another twist on 77 minutes when Ulster's two time try scorer Andrew Maxwell was yellow carded after he was caught with his hands in the ruck. With Simon Best already in the bin, Ulster were down to 13 men.
Simon Best returned to the field two minutes later and Ulster thought they had had the last word when David Humphreys slotted his fourth successful penalty of the night on 83 minutes. However it was Duncan Hodge who added the finishing touches to the scoreline as he converted his own try on 87 minutes - his monster penalty attempt on 89 minutes from the half-way line in order to salvage a bonus point just falling short of the posts.
