The Borders dominated the first half and Ulster looked like a lack lustre side, some harsh words at half time gave the homeside the boost they needed.
Kieron Dawson made his first touch down for Ulster in the 56th minute following a short lineout, Dawson barged his way over the line and took the score to11-5.
MacRae reduced the gap to three points with a penalty but their was no stopping Ulster in this mood.
In the 61st minute Kieran Campbell took Justin Harrison's tap-down from the line out and ran through a space to touch down for a much needed extra 5 points. Humphreys converted and the score stood at 18-8.
Just 8 minutes later Justin Fitzpatrick extended the lead and drove the ball over from five yards, Ulster began to look like the team we have been used to seeing this season. Humphreys converted and the score stood at 25-8.
Paul McKenzie came on late in the game for his first senior Ulster cap.
In the last moments of extra time Australian Mark Bartholomeusz set up Paul Steinmetz for that crucial bonus point.
