After a good Ulster start that saw tries for Ulster centres Kevin Maggs and Paul Steinmetz added to a David Humphreys? penalty, the home side?s weak defence gifted Edinburgh?s Paul Boston an easy score which Brendan Laney converted.
Laney added two more penalties before the half was out and the team entered the break level on 13 points apiece.
Half-Time Score: Ulster 13 - 13 Edinburgh
Humphreys, who uncharacteristically had a fairly indifferent night with the boot, kicked a penalty to give Ulster the edge at the start of the second half, but an Edinburgh intercept seven minutes later saw No. 8 Allister Hogg steal a score, again converted by Laney. Ulster 16 ? 18 Edinburgh
Man of the match Paul Steinmetz who worked tirelessly all evening looked certain to score before he was tap tackled close to the line, Roger Wilson recycled the ball but further driving attempts by the forwards failed to cross the whitewash.
A David Humphreys penalty on 57 minutes brought Ulster to within one point of the visitors and after he missed another attempt on 60 minutes, centre Paul Steinmetz took over the kicking duties, slotting over his first kick of the evening on 63 minutes to edge Ulster ahead, Ulster 22 ? 20 Edinburgh
Edinburgh full-back Derrick Lee scored their third try of the evening on 67 minutes, agan converted by Laney who didn?t miss all evening. Ulster responded almost immediately with their third score from winger Tommy Bowe after a superb Steinmetz break, and the Kiwi centre converted to push Ulster ahead again, Ulster 29 ? 27 Edinburgh
Ulster secured their bonus point with a try from replacement second row Rowan Frost converted by Steinmetz but as had been the pattern all evening, Edinburgh bit back with a fourth try of their own from replacement David Callam.
However, Laney?s conversion wasn?t enough to steal the win, Ulster had already done enough to hang on.
