Paul Steinmetz added another penalty for Ulster at 26 minutes before Academy player Niall O'Connor scored a breakaway try on the 30 minute mark. The try was unconverted, Ulster 11-10 Gloucester.
Gloucester's Willie Walker added a drop goal shortly after to put the visitors two points ahead at the half time break.
Both sides returned to the field with everything to play for. Walker missed an early penalty chance when he kicked the ball wide but Ulster Full Back Bryn Cunningham scored an excellent try on 46 minutes to put the home side just ahead. Ulster 16- 13 Gloucester.
Gloucester levelled the score line with a penalty from replacement Ryan Lamb just a few minutes later. But Paul Steinmetz replied with a successful kick for Ulster but was then stretchered off the field after a nasty collision with giant Gloucester winger Lesley Vainikolo. Steinmetz has since been diagnosed with concussion and a head laceration and will stay overnight in hospital for observation.
Despite a late rally from Ulster in the dying stages of the game a 75minuite try for Gloucester Peter Buxton converted by Lamb was the final score of the match Ulster 19-23 Gloucester.
Ulster Assistant Coach Steve Williams said "This game has provided some invaluable experience for some of our young players who have got some good game-time against premiership finalists. We carried on from where we left off last week there were some unforced errors but I suppose these are to be expected as this young group settles into rugby at this level. At times we could have made some better decisions but they have to learn. I thought the front row played extremely well against virtually international opposition.
